Sometimes the weather has a way of making you nervous right up until it gives you something beautiful in return.

The Redwine family’s summer session in the mountains of North Carolina started with a little bit of uncertainty. Rain was moving through the area, and we weren’t quite sure what the evening was going to look like. But thankfully, the rain passed just before we started — and honestly, it ended up being the perfect thing for us.

Instead of dealing with the usual summer heat, we got a little break from the temperatures, cooler mountain air, and eventually one of those gorgeous sunsets that makes you remember exactly why photographing families in the mountains is so special.

We started their session at Moses Cone Park, surrounded by the beautiful scenery of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The girls brought so much personality to the evening, especially when they got the chance to run, twirl, and dance around in their dresses. There is just something about photographing kids when they can forget the camera is even there and simply be themselves.

And these girls definitely knew how to have fun.

From the beginning of the session to the end, there were plenty of laughs, dancing, and those little in-between moments that are often some of my favorites to photograph. The goal wasn’t to make everyone stand perfectly still and smile at the camera — it was to capture them. Their personalities, their connection, and what this season of life looks like for their family right now.

As the evening went on, we made our way to Thunderhill Overlook for the second part of their session. And this is where the mountain magic really showed up.

The clouds began to break, the rain was long gone, and we were treated to a beautiful summer sunset over the mountains. It was the perfect ending to an already fun evening.

There’s something pretty special about family photos in the mountains. Maybe it’s the views, maybe it’s the changing light, or maybe it’s simply being somewhere beautiful where everyone can slow down for a little while and enjoy being together.

For the Redwine family, it was a summer evening filled with mountain views, dancing girls, plenty of laughter, and a sunset that couldn’t have been timed any better.

And I’d say the rain worked out in our favor after all. ♡
